Hank Green has acknowledged that his increasing use of AI chatbots has become unhealthy, telling fans he plans to slow down his YouTube output after facing criticism over his creative process.

The author, comedian, and YouTuber, who has more than 3.2 million subscribers, came under scrutiny after viewers noticed an unusual phrase in a recent video published on the educational YouTube channel Complexly. The wording prompted speculation that artificial intelligence had been used to help write the script.

The discussion gained momentum after Green responded to a now-deleted post on X, explaining that he created the video while "under a ton of pressure" and had used ChatGPT "for research on this script." He also clarified that the phrase "I appreciate the pushback" was intended as a response to the episode's guest rather than an AI-generated reply that had mistakenly remained in the script.

Hank Green Explains How He Used ChatGPT

Green later addressed the situation in greater detail on Reddit, where he apologized to his audience and admitted he was "mortified" that he had "let so many people down." He added that the experience has led him to rethink his production schedule and reduce the number of videos he publishes.

According to Green, ChatGPT has primarily been used to help locate academic papers and other learning resources rather than generate his opinions or writing.

He said the words and the "takes" in his videos have continued to be his own, while acknowledging that critics were justified in questioning whether his increasing AI use had "diluted" his work.

Green also emphasized that he is "not a pure AI-hater," but reiterated concerns about the technology, including its environmental impact and "the speed at which these companies are trying to consolidate economic power."

YouTuber Plans Fewer Videos After AI Controversy

Looking ahead, Green said he wants to establish a clearer creative process that reassures viewers his work reflects his own voice.

"Ultimately, what I am most scared of is ruining myself for people, but I have not been managing my impulses well," he said. "You need to know that my words are mine. I don't think that this hasn't been true, but I've been moving so fast that my own process isn't actually clear to me and I want to have it be a guarantee moving forward."

As part of that effort, Green said he will either pause or reduce the frequency of uploads across his YouTube channels. He hopes to spend more time creating projects similar to a recent reflective video that he described as one "where the writing was the whole thing and I felt it all the way down."

He also expects to produce more informal videos featuring what he called his "dumb unscripted straight to camera thoughts."

Reflecting on his recent habits, Green acknowledged that interacting with large language models had affected his approach to work.

"But mostly I need to come to terms with the fact that the level of dopamine I've been getting from interacting with LLMs…with doing more and more and more and more…is not healthy for me or good for the world," Green said. "It is careless, and has disconnected me from where people are on this."
