X Corp. And World Federation Of Advertisers Settle Legal Dispute Over Alleged Ad Boycott
GARM was established to improve digital safety and reduce exposure to "harmful and misleading media environments" while helping protect participating brands.

X Corp. and the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA) have reached an agreement to end their legal dispute, with both organizations saying the settlement marks a fresh start in their relationship.
In a joint statement, the companies said the agreement resets their relationship following a lawsuit that began in 2024. As part of the resolution, X has dismissed its appeal, bringing the case to a close.

The legal battle centered on claims by X that the WFA and several of its members orchestrated an "illegal boycott" by withholding billions of dollars in advertising spending over concerns about the platform's content moderation policies.
Earlier in 2026, a judge dismissed the lawsuit after ruling that X had failed to demonstrate harm under competition laws. X later appealed that decision before ultimately withdrawing its claims as part of the settlement.
X Ends Legal Challenge Against WFA Over Advertising Boycott Claims
The lawsuit primarily targeted the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), an initiative launched in 2019 by members of the WFA. Founding participants included Adidas, Mars, Mastercard, NBCUniversal, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and Vodafone.
GARM was established to improve digital safety and reduce exposure to "harmful and misleading media environments" while helping protect participating brands.
Just days after X filed its lawsuit in 2024, the WFA announced that GARM would be wound down. Under the terms of the settlement, the organization has agreed not to revive GARM or create a comparable initiative.
Settlement Resets Relationship Between X And Advertising Industry Group
The joint statement emphasized shared priorities between the two organizations moving forward.
"WFA reiterates its commitment to freedom of speech, a principle first included in WFA's founding constitution back in 1953, and a principle it shares with X," the statement reads. "WFA and X are fully aligned in the view that brands, platforms and consumers will all benefit from brand-safety innovation."
The agreement formally ends the legal dispute and establishes a new framework for cooperation between X and the advertising trade organization.
