Meta Ray-Ban Display Smart Glasses Can Automatically Disable The Screen While Driving
Meta’s Audio Only and Driving Detection features let Ray-Ban Display glasses automatically shut off visual information when users get behind the wheel.

Smart glasses are gradually finding their way into everyday routines, giving users quick access to notifications, calls, and voice features without requiring them to constantly reach for a smartphone. That hands-free convenience can be useful throughout the day, but a built-in display can become an unwanted distraction when someone gets behind the wheel.
Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses are not intended to serve as a real-time navigation system for drivers. Instead, users who want to continue wearing the glasses in a vehicle can switch them to Audio Only mode, which completely disables the visual display while retaining supported audio features.
With the screen turned off, users can continue making hands-free calls and accessing quick voice commands without visual information appearing in front of them. Meta also provides a way to automate the change so drivers do not have to manually activate the setting every time they enter a vehicle.
How Meta Ray-Ban Display Driving Detection Works
The Meta AI app includes a Driving Detection feature designed to recognize when the wearer is traveling in a moving vehicle. When enabled, the feature works with the glasses' internal sensors to determine when the user is driving and automatically switches off the display.
Once the trip ends and the wearer leaves the vehicle, the display can automatically become available again. This allows the glasses to transition between their regular display experience and Audio Only operation without requiring users to repeatedly adjust the setting.

Setting up the feature starts in the Meta AI app. Users can open Settings, select their glasses, and then go to Device Settings. From there, Audio Only can be enabled alongside Driving Detection.
The Meta AI app may request additional permissions because the feature also requires access to sensors on the connected smartphone.
Users who prefer direct control can switch Audio Only mode manually with a voice command. Meta supports the command, "Hey Meta, turn on/off audio only."
Meta Ray-Ban Display Does Not Provide Driving Navigation
Drivers should not expect the glasses to replace the navigation system in their smartphone or vehicle. Meta Ray-Ban Display currently supports pedestrian navigation rather than turn-by-turn navigation intended for driving.
The glasses do not provide the combination of real-time traffic information, lane guidance, and more advanced mapping features typically required for road navigation. Drivers who need directions should therefore continue using an appropriate smartphone navigation app or their vehicle's built-in navigation system.
That distinction also keeps the display from becoming another source of visual information competing for a driver's attention while on the road.
Audio Only Mode Can Also Help Preserve Battery
Reducing visual distractions is the primary benefit of disabling the display while driving, but Audio Only mode can offer another advantage: battery conservation.
Keeping the display switched off during a trip reduces the amount of time the screen is operating, potentially preserving battery power for situations when the visual features of the glasses are more useful.
For users who wear Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses throughout the day, Driving Detection provides a convenient way to automatically change how the device behaves behind the wheel while keeping supported hands-free audio functionality available.
