Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Predicts Billions Will Use Personal AI Agents Within Five Years

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes personal AI agents will become a part of everyday life within the next five years, with billions of people relying on them to manage tasks and achieve personal goals.

Speaking during the company's quarterly earnings call with investors on Wednesday, Zuckerberg outlined his vision for AI assistants that go beyond answering questions by actively working on behalf of users around the clock across multiple areas of their lives.

He said these AI agents could eventually assist with everything from managing finances and monitoring health to handling household responsibilities and improving personal relationships.

“I think that it’s extremely unlikely if you look out five years from now, for example — whatever period of time you want — that you don’t have billions of people with a personal agent that understands your goals and that is just working on your behalf 24/7 to achieve your goals in whatever the domain is that you care about,” Zuckerberg said during the earnings call.

He added that these AI-powered assistants could become valuable tools for everyday life, helping users across a wide range of personal needs.

“As we move toward a future where we’re all interacting with multiple agents, I think that WhatsApp and our other messaging surfaces are going to become increasingly important,” he said, noting that WhatsApp is already the primary platform where users engage with Meta AI.

Meta's ambitions align with a broader industry push toward AI systems capable of taking actions for users rather than simply responding to prompts.

Google has highlighted personalized AI agents as a major component of its revamped Search experience, while Anthropic has seen growing interest in its Claude subscriptions, driven in part by demand for its agentic coding assistant, Claude Code.

Meta Continues Heavy AI Investments Despite Investor Concerns

While Meta is pursuing an aggressive AI strategy, the company continues to spend heavily on long-term technology initiatives.

Following the quarterly earnings report, Meta's stock fell nearly 10%. Meanwhile, Reality Labs—the division behind the company's augmented reality glasses, virtual reality headsets, and related software—reported another quarterly loss of approximately $4.6 billion, consistent with losses it has recorded since 2021. Cumulative losses for the division now stand at roughly $88 billion.

Meta's investment in AI infrastructure is also accelerating. The company reported free cash flow of $784 million for the quarter, down from $8.55 billion during the same period a year earlier, representing a 91% year-over-year decline as spending on AI infrastructure increased.

Earlier this week, Meta and BlackRock announced a partnership to develop a $14 billion data center in El Paso, Texas.

“We believe that there will continue to be a significantly higher margin on selling intelligence rather than selling compute directly, but we think that there’s a big opportunity, obviously, to sell compute as well,” Zuckerberg said.

Meta Sees AI Agents As Future Growth Opportunity

Zuckerberg said the company's long-term AI strategy extends beyond today's products.

Ultimately, he believes the personal AI agents Meta is building will become “the foundation for our next wave of products and revenue lines in the months and years ahead.”

The company has already introduced business AI agents globally across WhatsApp and Messenger. According to Meta, more than one million businesses have adopted those tools so far. The company now faces the challenge of expanding similar adoption among consumers as it works toward its vision of bringing personal AI agents to billions of users.
