A vehicle that looks a little like an ambulance is preparing to hit the streets of Tokyo, but its passengers and patients are very different from those found in a conventional emergency vehicle.

GMO AI & Robotics Corporation, or GMO AIR, is introducing what it describes as Japan’s first dedicated maintenance vehicle for humanoid robots in September 2026. Called the GMO Humanoid Ambulance, the vehicle is designed to respond when humanoids supplied by the company malfunction or encounter technical problems.

Instead of medical equipment, the vehicle carries diagnostic systems, major replacement components and repair tools. A humanoid engineer travels with the vehicle to diagnose problems and, where possible, repair the robot at the location. If repairs cannot be completed on-site, GMO AIR says a replacement humanoid can be provided while the malfunctioning machine is transported to an appropriate repair facility, including the GMO Humanoid Lab Shibuya Showroom.

GMO Humanoid Ambulance Brings Robot Repairs Directly To The Site

The service is not intended to operate as a general emergency network for every humanoid robot in Tokyo. GMO AIR says the vehicle is its own equipment and is designed to maintain humanoids that the company has helped deploy. Whether it is dispatched will be determined individually based on the robot’s condition and GMO AIR’s operating capacity.

The vehicle also carries engineers who normally work with humanoids at GMO’s Shibuya facility. According to the company, these technicians are involved in secondary development and routinely work directly with the machines, giving them experience with their operation and potential failures.

The concept arrives as GMO AIR expands its work deploying humanoids in real-world environments.

In April 2026, GMO AIR, JAL Ground Service and Japan Airlines announced a demonstration project involving humanoid robots in airport ground-handling operations. The trial began in May and is scheduled to run through March 31, 2028, with the companies exploring whether humanoids can help automate labor-intensive airport operations.

Replacement Humanoids Could Reduce Downtime

GMO AIR developed the maintenance vehicle after encountering a practical problem with robot deployments: when a machine requires off-site repairs, its work can be interrupted until it returns.

The company’s answer is to bring both repair capabilities and a replacement machine to the site. If technicians cannot restore the malfunctioning humanoid immediately, another robot can take its place while the original unit is transported for further work.

GMO AIR President and CEO Tomohiro Uchida said keeping humanoids operational will be important as deployments expand.

“For humanoid robots to become established in society, it is essential to ‘keep them running.’”

Uchida added that introducing humanoids without a system capable of responding to failures would make broader deployment difficult. GMO AIR says it intends to apply the GMO Internet Group’s experience operating internet infrastructure to the emerging infrastructure needed to support humanoid robots.

The ambulance itself was designed with visibility and functionality in mind. GMO says Yasumichi Morita, head of GLAMOROUS, designed its interior and exterior after drawing inspiration from emergency vehicles used around the world.

Japan Is Expanding Its AI Robotics Push

The unusual maintenance vehicle also arrives during a broader Japanese effort to accelerate the adoption of AI-powered robotics.

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry released a revised AI Robotics Strategy in June 2026 that sets a target of introducing approximately 10 million robots by 2040. The government plans to promote deployment across 18 areas, including food service, food and beverage manufacturing, and health care.

The strategy also calls for support for companies adopting AI robots and the creation of a core AI robotics hub focused on research and development, real-world deployment and workforce development.

GMO AIR, meanwhile, does not position itself primarily as a humanoid manufacturer. The company describes its business as supporting the introduction and use of AI, robots and drones, while offering services intended to support humanoids from deployment through operation, improvement and maintenance.

The GMO Humanoid Ambulance is part of that approach. For now, it is a specialized maintenance vehicle serving GMO AIR deployments rather than a citywide robot emergency service. But the company says it plans to continue expanding services that support humanoid robots after they enter operation.
