Capcom Plans More Franchise Revivals After Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Sells 1 Million Copies
The strong launch of Onimusha: Way of the Sword adds momentum to Capcom’s strategy of bringing long-dormant game franchises back into active development.

Capcom is looking deeper into its extensive catalog of game franchises following the strong debut of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, as the Japanese publisher continues a broader strategy of bringing dormant properties back into the spotlight.
Released on September 4, 2026, Onimusha: Way of the Sword surpassed 1 million copies sold worldwide on its first day. The launch also pushed lifetime sales of the Onimusha franchise beyond 10 million units, according to Capcom.
The game marks the first new Onimusha title in roughly 20 years and follows protagonist Miyamoto Musashi through a dark fantasy version of Kyoto during the early Edo period. It is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
Capcom Confirms Plans To Reactivate More Dormant Game Franchises
The success of Way of the Sword comes as Capcom makes the revival of older properties a more deliberate part of its development strategy.
"In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven't had a new title launch recently," the company said while announcing the game's launch-day sales. "The company is working to further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including this title."

Capcom has already put that strategy into action beyond Onimusha. An Okami sequel is in development, bringing another long-dormant Capcom franchise back with members of the original game's development team involved in the project.
The publisher is also returning to Mega Man with Mega Man: Dual Override, further expanding a revival strategy that allows Capcom to draw on established properties alongside its newer games.
Dino Crisis Remains One Of Capcom's Most Notable Dormant Franchises
One of the most prominent names still sitting in Capcom's catalog is Dino Crisis. The series has gone without an entirely new installment for more than two decades, with Dino Crisis 3 originally arriving in 2003.
Capcom has nevertheless made the older games more accessible to modern players. Dino Crisis and Dino Crisis 2 arrived on Steam in February 2026 after previously returning through GOG, putting the classic games in front of another generation of PC players.
That renewed availability does not amount to confirmation of a new Dino Crisis. Capcom has not announced Dino Crisis 4, a remake, or another new installment as of September 2026.
Still, the franchise stands out among the company's inactive properties as Capcom publicly commits to reactivating IP that has gone without new releases.
Devil May Cry And Ace Attorney Remain Major Capcom Franchises
Other established Capcom series have also gone years without entirely new mainline entries.
Devil May Cry 5 launched in 2019, leaving the franchise without another new mainline installment since then. Despite that gap, Devil May Cry remains one of Capcom's largest properties, with cumulative series sales reaching 41 million units.
Ace Attorney is another sizable franchise in Capcom's portfolio. The courtroom adventure series has reached 15 million units in cumulative sales, according to Capcom's latest published franchise data.
Neither sales milestone confirms that a new Devil May Cry or Ace Attorney game is in development. However, both demonstrate the size of the established audiences attached to properties across Capcom's catalog.
Onimusha Success Strengthens Capcom's Dormant IP Strategy
Onimusha: Way of the Sword provides Capcom with an early example of what returning to an older franchise can deliver commercially.
Capcom says the game benefited from several pre-release marketing initiatives, including multiple playable demos and hands-on exhibitions designed to broaden awareness ahead of launch. Those efforts helped the game cross 1 million worldwide sales on release day.
The milestone also lifted the entire Onimusha franchise beyond 10 million lifetime sales, giving the revived series a significant new commercial benchmark.
Capcom has not revealed which dormant property it will revive next. But with Onimusha successfully returning after roughly two decades and the company explicitly committing to reactivating more of its catalog, additional comeback projects could become an increasingly important part of its release pipeline.
