iOS 27 Adds Apple Cash Bill Splitting With Visual Intelligence — Here’s How It Works

Apple is giving iPhone users a new way to handle one of the more tedious parts of eating out with friends: figuring out who owes what when the bill arrives.

With iOS 27, Apple Cash and Apple Intelligence can work together to scan a restaurant receipt, identify its individual items, and calculate how much each person needs to pay. Rather than manually adding up meals or dividing the entire check evenly, users can select the items they ordered and settle their portion through Apple Cash.

The feature works with a scanned receipt or an existing photo of a bill and can be accessed through Messages, Apple Wallet, Visual Intelligence, and the new Siri mode in the Camera app. When a receipt is recognized, iOS can identify its items and calculate a person's total, including their portion of tax and tip.

How iOS 27 Apple Cash Bill Splitting Works

Using the feature starts with getting the receipt onto the iPhone. Users can scan a physical receipt with the camera or work from a photo of the bill.

Apple says that when Siri mode in Camera is pointed at a receipt, the iPhone can recognize what is in front of it and surface an option to split the bill with Apple Cash. The software then identifies the individual items listed on the receipt.

From there, users can select the items they need to pay for. iOS 27 calculates the corresponding amount and includes the person's share of tax and tip in the total.

That approach is particularly useful when a group has ordered items at different prices. Instead of assuming everyone owes an identical amount, the feature lets participants account for what they actually ordered before settling the bill.

Users should still review the detected items and totals before completing a payment, particularly when a restaurant receipt contains discounts, service charges, promotions, or shared dishes.

What You Need To Split Bills With Apple Cash

The payment portion of the feature relies on Apple Cash, meaning its availability is more limited than some of the other Wallet improvements coming with iOS 27.

Apple Cash is a U.S.-based service, so the new bill-splitting capability isn't a worldwide iOS 27 payment feature. Users will need access to Apple Cash and compatible Apple Intelligence functionality to take advantage of the complete experience.

The bill itself also needs to be readable by the iPhone. A clear photograph or a physical receipt that the camera can properly recognize will give the system the information it needs to identify individual purchases.

iOS 27 Can Turn Physical Cards Into Apple Wallet Passes

Bill splitting isn't the only way Apple is expanding Visual Intelligence in Wallet.

iOS 27 also introduces the ability to create and store Apple Wallet passes from physical cards. Users can point the new Siri mode in Camera at a physical card containing a barcode or capture a compatible digital card, and the iPhone can offer to save it to Wallet.

The feature is designed for items such as loyalty and membership cards that might otherwise remain in a physical wallet. Once a compatible pass has been created, its barcode or QR code can be presented directly from an iPhone or Apple Watch.

Users can also create a pass directly inside the Wallet app. The new Create a Pass feature supports scanning with Visual Intelligence as well as manual creation, providing another option when a physical card does not already have an official digital Wallet version.

Apple Wallet Is Becoming More Flexible In iOS 27

The new features extend Wallet beyond payment cards and passes officially distributed by businesses.

Physical loyalty cards and other supported cards can be converted into digital passes, while Apple Intelligence can help users deal with shared restaurant bills without manually calculating every person's total.

Apple announced the Wallet improvements in June 2026 and said its new software features would arrive as part of its fall software releases. As with other upcoming Apple features, availability can vary by device, language, and region.

For Apple Cash users in particular, receipt scanning could make settling a group dinner considerably more straightforward: scan the bill, choose the relevant items, check the calculated total, and pay what you owe.
